"Darling it's better down where it's wetter, take it from me" - Sebastian, The Little Mermaid1/21/2017 Sebastian was totally right. Every girl who watched this movie wanted to be a part of Ariel's world and would have happily traded their legs for Ariel's tail. Win-win, right? Unfortunately, we can't really become mermaids, but we can still bring some magic to our little mermaids in-training. I had seen many, many mermaid tails on Pinterest and instantly fell in love; I couldn't wait to make one. However, I wasn't so sure if I was up to the challenge of actually making one for myself - I was intimidated by the size! Fortunately, a very good friend was due to have a baby girl so I jumped on this opportunity to make a mermaid tail. This way I could make a baby-sized mermaid tail and not get overwhelmed by making an adult-sized version on my first attempt. I searched through Pinterest again looking through the different styles that others had created and settled on the crocodile stitch style. I loved that this stitch looked like scales and had a lot of texture. I had picked a look, but how to start? I had no idea how to even do the crocodile stitch. I found an amazing video on YouTube "How to Crochet Baby Mermaid Outfit with Crocodile Stitch" by Fuad Azmat / YARNutopia by Nadia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0gVjc0TrFk). This video is an hour and a half long and takes you through each and every step of the process. I found it quite valuable since I had neither done this stitch before nor made a mermaid tail before. This video does not include a written pattern so you will have to follow along with the video for all the instructions. I'm not an advanced crocheter therefore it did take me longer than the length of the video to actually complete my mermaid tail. I didn't really keep track of time but my best guess would be that it took me around 6 hours to complete this project. The first time is always the slowest but hopefully if I make one again I can cut off at least a third of that time. To create my mermaid tail, I used 2 skeins of Lion Brand Homespun yarn in "Ambrosia" and used a 6.00 mm or "J" size crochet hook. You don't need very much yarn for the drawstring so I recommend not buying new yarn and using something in your yarn stash (if you have one), which is what I did. For the cherry on top, since this was a gift, I added a little card with lyrics from "The Little Mermaid" to make it even more special for my friend. "Darling it's better down where it's wetter, take it from me...while we devotin' full time to floatin', under the sea" - Sebastian, Disney's The Little Mermaid.
